Definition of Social Work

Social Work is defined by Kabaso Sydney Mupukwa (2008) as a helping profession with the aid of appropriate social service that links people with system that enhance efficient use of resources.

Social work as a helping profession entails that vulnerable members of the society should be helped to solve problems and live in a state of well being.It is in this aspect that it beliefs in client self responsibility, client self determination and belief in equal distribution of resources by coping up capacity in people for change.Clients has the inherent capacity inside them that should be fully utilized and called upon for ones development.

As a helping profession also provides coping of individuals from their problems through critical conscientisation of available resource.It is in this aspect that principle of social development is used as an approach of involving people in their own development rather than being receptive.Individuals are empowered with knowledge and skills of problem solving, formulation of objectives, implementation and evaluation of projects and programmes.

Social work as a helping profession link people with systems that enhance efficient use of resources.When an individual is empowered with knowledge of social work, it unlikely for such a person to be dependent on another person but rather self defendant.
